The Mission of AZ High School Bowling is to provide extracurricular interscholastic and intramural bowling opportunities for students who want to represent their high school.
The Vision of AZ High School Bowling is that the Arizona Interscholastic Association recognizes bowling as a Varsity sport.
How AZ HIGH SCHOOL BOWLING operates:
The state is divided geographically by city/regions: Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma, Kingman and the White Mountains. The state is technically an interscholastic Club state, although we operate our program with the Varsity and Junior Varsity designations. When the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) sanctions bowling, Arizona will become an Interscholastic Varsity state.
Teams consist of ten players on the roster; six compete in a match. Players are assigned to the lanes in groups of three players to enable a more timely completion of matches.
Scoring is unique to each region and is explained in the section describing the region. The rules, standings and schedules can also be viewed on the region pages.
A State Championship event is rotated between Phoenix and Tucson for the Varsity teams. The winner of the boys and girls varsity divisions of the Phoenix Region bowl the winners of the Tucson Region. This year the competition is scheduled for Tucson on February 16, 2008 in a center to be announced.
The program is operated as a part of the national United States Bowling Congress High School Bowling Program. The USBC offers a free membership to the students during the season of high school competition. Each team registers itself via an online registration process on the USBC High School website. Awards and scholarships are also available to the students through this program. Dexter (shoes) sponsors the All American Team through which five boys and five girls are honored and receive a scholarship worth $1,000 each. For all the Varsity level state programs, Denny’s (restaurants) sponsors a championship tournament for graduating individual seniors awarding over $10,000 in scholarships to the participating students.
The AZ Bowling Proprietors have funded this program. The cost of bowling, uniforms and awards are provided so that there is little if any expense to the schools. Booster Clubs are encouraged and the AZ Tax Credit program is a suggested vehicle for fundraising.
