Varsity State: A state where the Interscholastic Association has recognized and sanctioned bowling as a varsity sport.
Club State: A state whose program is not yet recognized by its Interscholastic Association. Arizona is a Club state.
Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA): The governing body of high school sports and activities in Arizona. (Each state [and the District of Columbia] has its own individual organization with their own rules and regulations.)
National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS): The national membership association of the State Interscholastic Associations.
United States Bowling Congress (USBC): The governing body of the sport of bowling.
Interscholastic Competition: Competition between different high schools.
Intramural Competition: Competition between students of the same high school.
Farm Club: A program similar to an intramural program, organized with the intention of creating an interscholastic team.
Roster: The players who are considered team members, not all of who compete each match. (Ten in AZ)
Playing Strength: The number of players competing during a game in a match. (Six in AZ)
Varsity Team: The interscholastic team with the highest ranking players of a school.
Junior Varsity Team: The interscholastic team with the remaining players of a school.
Bowling Team: Players representing the high school. (When there are insufficient girls to field a girl’s team, the girls may bowl on the Bowling Team.) [This is a Title IX requirement.]
Girls Bowling Team: Female players representing the high school Only girls are permitted to be members of the Girls Team.
Title IX: A federal mandate to create parity in interscholastic sports.
NonSchool Participating, Independent Play Rule, School Loyalty Rule: A student who is a member of a high school team is not permitted to play on any other outside team. (This rule does not apply in Arizona.)
Amateur: An amateur athlete is one who engages in sport for the physical, mental or social benefits derived there from and to whom the sport is nothing more than an avocation. An amateur athlete is one is has never used and is not using his/her knowledge of athletics or athletic skill in an athletic contest for financial gain.
Individual Match Play: Players on one team bowl against the corresponding player on the opposing team. The winner receives one point.
Twenty Seven Point System: Each game is worth nine (9) points, three (3) games are bowled in a match. A point is awarded for each individual win (6 players), one point is awarded for the highest total scores of each of the two trios (2) and one point (1) is awarded for the highest combined total pins of all six players.
Match Standing Point: One point is awarded to the team who wins the match.
